Facebook Knows You

The 500 million budding Facebookers of today are now freaking out about the new controversial upgrade Facebook are introducing. The facial recognition upgrade will automatically tag your mates for you by matching similar faces from other photos. It will be hitting the US in the next few weeks and will certainly raise even further concerns about users’ privacy.

The whole idea is pretty straightforward; If you have a picture of yourself and a group of friends, Facebook will use its facial recognition technology to match similar faces together who are in the same photo album and automatically suggest that you should tag them. However you’re now probably thinking that many people look similar and it will be easy for  Facebook to make a mistake. To combat that Facebook have said that the suggestions will only appear when they have a “high confidence” of who’s being suggested, however Facebook won’t reveal its level of certainty and won’t say what percentage correlates to “high confidence”.

Tagging photos is seen as a chore, even though it is the most popular feature on Facebook itself. As Facebook photos are such a vital feature in Facebook’s world wide success, if something were to fail it would course havoc for millions of people.  This only one of many updates Facebook are introducing so all you Facebookers out there prepare for more…..
