Game Review: L.A. Noire

Michael Griffith reviews the brand new computer game: L.A. Noire

Rockstar Games is well known for games like Grand Theft Auto, Bully Midnight club, Max Panye and Red Dead Redemption which have sold millions worldwide. The Rockstar Games label was founded in 1988 by Dan Houser and Sam Houser and has been going strong ever since. They have now created the hit crime thriller, third person action adventure: L.A Noire.

L.A Noire is a crime thriller, adventure game, which is set in the 1940s L.A, right after the World War II, in the middle of the golden ages of Hollywood. 1940s L.A was filled with corruption, petty criminals, corrupt government officials, crooked cops and maniacs from the war who couldn’t live in the world outside the battlefield.

The gamer will play as Cole Phelps, a shady character, who has had a very interesting but disturbing past because of his experiences in the war.

L.A Noire is based around the stories of the film-sets of Noir and its themes including: Crime, Sex and Moral Ambiguity, relate to stories like L.A Confidential which has the same story of two police officers who get caught up in the corruption of 1950s.

Criminal underworlds were rising because governments couldn’t handle the cost of re-building. L.A. Noire, therefore, is not only a great plot but a background story of the war.

L.A. Noire is a distinctive game because of the exact details on the character’s faces. The technology is called motion-scan, it uses 32 surrounding cameras in a studio to capture facial expressions from every angle. This feature is unique because when it’s time to interview a suspect or a witness, the gamer will have to decide whether the person is lying or telling the truth by observing the witnesses or suspect’s face or reaction.

Overall, I personally feel the game is a must-buy because it offers something completely different than all other games. It makes the user actually engage and work with the logical part of their brain. So in a way, its fun and educational, but blends detective work with the fun of a video game.
