TECHNOLOGY: DO APPLE AND BLACKBERRY HAVE COMPETITION?

Nokia phones seem to have been buried away after the dominating arrival of Apple’s iPhone and Blackberry’s “sudden” grasp of the market in past three years. Every time I get on the underground, everyone seems to have their heads down, looking at either a Blackberry or an iPhone… including myself!

However on 16 November, Nokia hopes to change the dynamics with the release of its new Nokia Lumina 800, not surprisingly a rectangular touchscreen phone. After looking at the first photos of the phone I can say it does look sleek, however it does also look a bit thick, meaning it might be slightly chunky to hold. Another downside and major mistake by Nokia is the lack of a front camera, for use with popular apps like Skype. Most new smart phones coming out are now equipped with the front camera, including the new iPhone 4s released recently.

Nokia also decided not to make the phone a cheaper alternative to Apple and Blackberry’s offerings, as its RRP is set to be around £450. This means it definitely needs to prove that it is better than the current leaders in the phone market.

Stephen Elop, Nokia’s CEO, claimed last Wednesday that this is the first “real Windows phone” and yesterday Joe Belfiore, Microsoft’s head of Windows Phone, said that he thinks “it’s fair”. This could be considered harsh on HTC and Samsung, who have also made Windows phones, but it means that a point is being made that the phone will be of a good standard.

There is a cheaper option set for release early 2012, called the Lumina 710, though there isn’t much information about that yet. Both phones are initially going to be released in black and cyan, with other colours coming later.

Nokia have traditionally hyped their new phone models a lot, and often they have turned out to be disappointments. Smart phones produced by Nokia have usually been slow and buggy, and sometimes more annoying than useful, so let’s hope this changes with the new Luminas. It better be a good phone for half a grand!

Don’t chew of more thank you can bit. It’s expensive, no front camera, no decent app. Nokia are you taking this seriously…?
