With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, the chanting sounds of ‘Roses are Red/ Violets are Blue’ are bound to set clichéd, young hearts fluttering throughout the country.
But if this year you are looking for your day of romance to be filled with that grown and sexy sophistication, why not spend this ‘V day’ weekend at Vocals and Verses.
Described as an ‘intimate night of poetry, comedy and live music’, Vocals and Verses gives a platform to some of the UK’s most talented spoken word poets and musicians. Bringing the focus of live entertainment to the talent itself, no gimmicks or flashing lights but rather attention is drawn to the words of the poets, and the sound of real music, the likes of which are bound to pluck at the heart strings.
Founded by 22 year old poet Benjamin ‘Chaléboy’ Bennett, Vocals and Verses is less than a year old, but already the event is well on the road to becoming an established brand, helping to elevate cultural performances as an alternative form of entertainment for young Londoners.
Bennett began holding these popular events to create a unified platform for spoken word artists and undiscovered musicians. He says about his event, ‘when I look at the underground scene there are a lot of poetry events, but they are very segregated, so a lot of people don’t get to experience the fullness of what London’s talent has to offer. I wanted to make something that brings all the different groups and parts of London together and make [Vocals and Verses] the leading brand for poetry and live music.’
What is so special about the genre that has made young people prefer to watch poetry rather than head to a club or concert, this Valentines? For many people including Bennett the rise in popularity of spoken word is simple, he says, ‘with spoken word, you have essentially, a poet, mike and ears; you are listening to the raw words of what [the poet] is saying. I believe that when people come to experience spoken word events they will leave with something, even if it is just one line, it has substance, it is entertaining but also edifying.’
The next Vocals and Verses is this Sunday 12th Feb, 19:30-22:30 at Proud Camden, with £8 tickets available on the door.
So which acts can you look forward to serenading you this Sunday?
