Emma gives us the latest on what’s too hot for headphones. A low-down to the biggest tunes this week.
Jason Mraz: ‘I Won’t Give Up’ (out now)
‘I Won’t Give Up’ is a fervidly charged, guitar-driven balled. With its simple melodic lines, it gradually builds to a bracing statement of strength in a long-term relationship. The sentiment of the track rings through loud and clear, marking a powerful return for Mraz.
Angel ft. Wretch 32: ‘Go In, Go Hard’ (out March 11)
Tipped for chart topping success by MTV Brand New and HMV’s Next Big Thing, the charismatic Angel is definitely one to watch this year. His official debut single ‘Go In, Go Hard,’ is a zealous R&B anthem, propelled in part by a stadium-ready chorus.
Nicki Minaj: ‘Marilyn Monroe’ (release date TBC)
After dividing opinion on the ill-mannered ‘Stupid Hoe’, Minaj shows a more compassionate side with leaked track ‘Marilyn Monroe.’ With its gentle piano riffs, the song is a hearty slice of demure pop, exposing the haunting imprint of her self-confessed imperfection.
Big Time Rush ft.Mann: ‘Music Sounds Better With U’ (out now)
Big Time Rush are the latest batch of shiny-looking popstars to emanate from the Nickelodeon mediocrity club. ‘Music Sounds Better With U’ may be a clichéd pop track, but as this song proves, there’s little shame in coming out with the expected – especially if you love nothing more than a bit of teeny-bobber pop.
Gym Class Heroes ft. Neon Hitch: ‘Ass Back Home’ (out February 20)
Following up to the chart-smash ‘Stereo Hearts,’ Travie McCoy and his heroes return with this perpetually light and easy-going track, taken from their forthcoming album The Papercut Chronicles II, out late February.
