Emma gives us the low-down on who she thinks you have to hear this week…
MIA: ‘Bad Girls’ (out now)
MIA takes fire at Saudi Arabia’s laws that ban women from driving. Gallivanting around the dessert with a bunch of Middle Eastern girls, the rebellious rapper produces a highly vehement track in the form of ‘Bad Girls’, which is indeed mighty powerful.
Mindless Behavior: ‘Mrs Right’ (release date February 19th )
If Chris Brown had four children, I’d imagine they wouldn’t be too dissimilar from US R&B-pop group Mindless Behavior. They may only be in their early teens, but they have already scored a top ten album in the States and toured with Janet Jackson, Jason Derulo and Justin Bieber. Their debut single ‘Mrs Right’ ft. Chipmunk, is a torpid R&B track, guaranteed to make every teenage girl swoon with adulation.
Dog is Dead: ’Two Devils’ (released March 4th)
There is no hint of sloppiness from Nottingham five-piece Dog Is Dead.’ Two Devils’ is undeniably a more melancholic affair, draping itself with intense, hard-hitting guitars and chiming crescendos. Having played various festivals last year, expect this band to appear on many line-ups this summer. After all, this kind of music, with its builds and summits are best played to large and ecstatic crowds.
Conor Maynard: ‘Can’t Say No’ (released March 8th)
After winning the coveted MTV: Brand New 2012 title ahead of favourite Lana Del Rey, 19-year-old Conor Maynard has already become a musical force to be reckoned with. His debut single ‘Can’t Say No’ is a slow R&B track, oppressed with a heavy bass line and similar to the alluring tones of Justin Timberlake.
Zulu Winter: ‘We Should Be Swimming’ (released 27th February)
This single is one of the lighter tracks I’ve wrapped my ears around in a while. The indie-dance tones undoubtedly hints at their commercial ambition. With its refreshing and weirdly hypnotic sound, it certainly deserves a listen.
