Introducing Ren Harvieu: 21 year old lass from Manchester, with her debut single Through The Night. Let’s turn our backs on the ear bashing likes of David Guetta and Will I Am, and go back to basics; with the chilled out, sultry sounds of Ren Harvieu.
Although your ears may be more accustomed to the heavy sounds of bass, Ren’s voice has a quiet elegance and adds a certain posterity to her. Her sound is reminiscent of the 60’s yet simultaneously timeless, it’s simply stunning.
This track in particular sounds like an infusion of great female artists from that era, with echoes of the likes of Dusty Springfield in the hues of Ren’s vocals. The video is a perfectly matching accompaniment to the audio, serving as a haze of 60’s inspired vibes; from the production to Ren’s style, it has an effortless flow.
Chances are that we could have heard from Ren last year (when we were instead having our ear-drums bored to death with the likes of David Guetta and Pitbull) as she was set to do a record with Nas but she was caught up in a freak accident leading to the most serious of consequences; a broken back. Doctors warned she may never walk again and now here she is having made a miraculous recovery 6 months later ready to be another great British female artist to add to our ever-growing collection.
My concern is she will be likened to Lana Del Ray or even accused of copying her, but it’s clear to me this really is Ren and to be frank she carries off this era based sound with a more defined sense of authenticity than Lana; call me biased coz I’m British, but it’s just something we are better at.
Keep your ears out for this one, 2012 is hers for the taking.
Watch the hazy 60′s hues and vibes and judge the lovely Ms Ren Harvieu for yourselves.
Through The Night is out now.
