Music: Robbie’s 5 Picks Of The Week

It’s that time of the week again, Robbie gives you his top 5 tracks that are rocking his ipod.. It’s February, it’s blooming cold, and we’ve all got the chills. Time then for a playlist to warm us all up, and take us away from the cold dusty reserves of busy city highstreets.

5. Gotye – Somebody That I Used To Know

Communion Records have done it again. Belgian singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, magician of all things music, Gotye, brings feelings of euphoria through songs of sheer joy. ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ is a perfect example of that euphoria. 59 million hits on Youtube and still counting.

4. Young Liar – Sponsored Silence

Newcastle’s Young Liar are the perfect jam band. The quaking layers of guitar they build to enigmatic peaks, accompany well to the tight drum lines that feel reminiscent of Foals first record. They’ve got that verve and excitement that Foals fans fell in love with, but bring a fresh take to the industrial indie genre. ‘Sponsored Silence’ is the perfect example of them in perfect, full flow. It’s wicked, listen.

3. Throwing Snow – Pyre

On having a standard day of searching around for 2step tunes on Soundcloud, I came across Throwing Snow. And from that moment my life was changed. I’ll say no more. Immerse yourself.

2. The Papershades – Where You Lay

The Papershades have a crisp sultry charm about them. Something that draws you in, and hugs you tight to the beautiful melodies their guitars weave. Sarah Doller’s voice is something of beauty. I’ll let you make your own minds up with this one. But as one audience member said at their London show this week: “I’m in some kind of trance”.

1. Andrew Butler – Guess Things Happen That Way (Johnny Cash Cover)

Johnny Cash is a legend, someone whose tracks shouldn’t be messed with. But Andrew Butler dared to, and it paid off. This cover’s a stream of heartbreak set to the perfect acoustic backing. Whistful, wonderful, zzz. It’s also up for free download. Clock it.
