Here’s what Live contributor Petra Valenti experienced when she attended the exclusive exhibition opening by Paolo Roversi in London. Check out her account
I had been looking forward to the opening of Paolo Roversi’s latest exhibition at the Wapping Project Bankside ever since I was invited.
Born in Ravenna in 1947, Paolo is one of the most esteemed fashion photographers currently working. His photography “allows time for the soul to appear”, he tells Ian Phillips. Roversi’s list of credits runs from shoots for Vogue, Elle, Marie Claire, Comme des Garcons, Valentino, Christian Dior and Yves Saint-Laurent just to mention a few. His images portray an almost suspended and ethereal beauty. His work has been exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Hara Museum in Tokyo, Centre Pompidou and Maison Europeene de la Photographie in Paris, the Guggenheim Museum in New York and the National Portrait Gallery and Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
Being represented in the UK by the Wapping Project Bankside for his first solo exhibition, he has focused on his muse Guinevere Van Seenus with a selection of black and white photographs (thoroughly chosen with the help of Jules Wright, gallery’s founder), which includes material from both Nudi and Studio Series; doubtless the broad white gallery and the low lighting setting helped the soul of this photographs to come out.
Paolo was in attendance at the opening, dividing himself between admirers and famous people, some of them flown from Italy just to attend the exhibition. I had the pleasure to be introduced to Franca Sozzani (Vogue Italia editor), Jules – who looked clearly excited about the exhibition (wearing an outstanding Yamamoto’s dress) and Paolo – very down-to-earth and friendly gentleman who didn’t loose his italian cheeky touch despite his residence in Paris since 1973.
Using Roversi’s words, “photography in not just a recreation of reality, it’s a revelation”. Now, you’ve got up till March 31st to go and check the revelation for yourself.
