Fashion: Rihanna On Search For Britain’s Next Top Designer

RnB singer Rihanna joins the ranks of musicians trying to get their hand in the fashion industry.

Whilst Kanye’s debut fashion line flopped like a fish out of water last season, RiRi is leaving it to the professionals and on the look out for Britain’s next top designer!  The Barbadian songstress, who managed to make the umbrella (ella, ella) an essential accessory in the summer of 2007, has just agreed to executive produce a Project Runway-esque reality show on Sky Living. The programme will see talented designers from across the country competing for the chance to dress the multi-award winning artist by creating pieces for various celebrities in a series of challenges over ten weeks.

In a statement, Rihanna said “I’ve always had a great love of fashion. It’s a constant source of inspiration in my life, and is a big reason why I’ve grown into the person and artist I am today.”

Not only is she set to help cast, edit, co-produce and appear in the series, the singer has also asked Nicola Roberts to host the show. The Girls Aloud singer is apparently flattered and excited to “get started on finding a new up and coming British designer who just needs a chance, and a little bit of help in getting their skills noticed – a concept Live loves, of course!

The winning contestant will have the chance to design an outfit for the singer to wow crowds at the Wireless Festival this summer. In the words of Sky Living, “the chance to dress one of the world’s most famous women for an event that will attract worldwide coverage is the perfect springboard for the aspiring designer’s future fashion career.”

Personally, I cannot wait to see the next generation of British design talent and what Rihanna can contribute to the industry. On first glance it may seem like another performer just giving the ‘fashion thing’ a go but, as Sky Living points out, “with her world-class reputation and passion for style, Rihanna is perfectly placed to find an aspiring designer worthy of the chance to break into the hugely competitive world of fashion”.

The programme will be aired this summer on Sky Living and in the meantime, here are a few of my favourite Rihanna looks. I may be biased (her Talk that Talk album is still played on repeat at the moment) but you have to love how she manages to work every look so well; whether it’s an origami gown or animal print hoodie!

Do you think her style is worthy of this latest role though?

Yeh totally – her style is really bold, unique, fun and provocative. That’s what a star should do for fashion and she totally deserves this!
