Sport: FA ‘set to axe Terry’

FA Chairmen David Bernstein has spoken to board members and the majority view is England captain John Terry should stand down, according to several news reports this morning. If true it will be the second time that John Terry’s captaincy has been taken away from him.Reports yesterday suggested manager Fabio Capello (pictured) was prepared to stand by his skipper, but the decision may now be taken out of his hands. John Terry is in danger of losing his captaincy, as the allegations of racially abusing Anton Ferdinand are due to be dealt with in court in July. The FA feels that if John Terry goes into Euro 2012 as captain, the other players will have doubt in his innocence and may not play as well.

Some England players believe John Terry should be the England captain, as he has been a great captain in previous years. But accusations of racism are taken very seriously in football, as the eight-match ban for Luis Suarez shows.

If Capello selects Rio Ferdinand, it raises the possibility of him and Terry being asked to partner one another in central defence just a few weeks before Terry appears at Westminster magistrates court for alleged racial abuse to his brother. The prosecution initially hoped to arrange a date in March but the trial has been fixed for 9 July because of delays.

Piara Powar, who is head of Football Against Racism in Europe, said, “The seriousness of the allegations mean that he can’t lead the nation. The FA must do the right thing.”

Reading player Jason Roberts (who campaigns with Kick it Out), has expressed his concerns via Twitter about the FA’s stance. He says, “Believe me, the dressing room at the Euros will be TOXIC unless the correct decision is made”

Had to happen. I doubt there’s a player anywhere who truly believes Terry’s excuse for what he said. He’ll be lucky if he even makes the team.

Get Terry out. The England captain is supposed to be a role model for kids. John Terry is not setting a good example therefore should be stripped of his captaincy. Give it to Rio Ferdinand or Steven Gerrard.
