By September 2009, the Brixton pound will be available to spend on local businesses as well as sterling and hopefully will boost Brixton's economy and help support local traders. On their website there is a vote as to who should be on the Brixton note. It's between Cyril Lionel Robert James, a famous journalist who wrote the first novel to be published by a black Caribbean author in the UK, Dan Len, a comedian in the 1800s, Harold Macmillan, a previous Conservative Prime Minister who lived in Brixton, James Lovelock, an inventor who invented the electron capture detector, Linton Kwesi Johnson, the only black poet to be published in the 'Penguin Classics' series and Olive Morris who was one of the founding members of the 'Black Women Group'. Alternatively, voters can send in their own suggestions. There's also a chance for under 18s to design a picture that is based around the themes of 'Local Shopping' and 'Brixton Places' or send in their own image of one of the people above or a famous landmark to be printed on the note so all young budding artists should get involved!
